Black & White Contemporary Home

The focus of this project was to open up the main floor of this 3 story home, eliminating walls that closed off the heavily used kitchen from the rest of the main living and dining spaces. The existing north facing kitchen felt tight and closed in and did not offer enough storage, counter space or display. The desire was to lighten and brighten up this new great room, incorporate additional kitchen storage and allow natural light to flood in from the many south facing windows that drinks in a city view. The owner loves all things culinary and caters events from time to time, so a space that offered thoughtful organization and additional counter work space was imperative. Easy access using a library ladder to the collection of glass serving pieces was a decorative feature that proves to work well and adds visual drama to the all white space. Black and white is a favourite color scheme of my client. Her existing black lacquered dining furniture was refinished and re-upholstered in a tactile white fabric and the addition of new white leather sectioanl and contemporary swivel chairs offers a happy place to sit and converse. New hardwood floors where matched after the removal of walls and incorporated throughout the whole main floor for consistency. Pops of color introduced in the area rugs, pillows and display pieces completed this fresh, high contrast great room.

The existing bathroom was cramped, dark and very tired. The lack of proper storage, a oval shower curtain that functioned poorly around the claw foot tub and not enough task lighting for grooming made this space lack lustre and problematic. We took space from a small closet in the master bedroom and reconfigured an new walk-in closet. Additional space from part of the old existing hallway allowed us to enlarge the bathroom allowing for adequate space for a new wet room that now incorporates the shower and the refaced claw foot tub. A classic color scheme of gray and white was introduced to offer a spa like appeal and keep the new space bright and airy. New lighting through recessed and wall sconce fixtures is dimmable when unwinding after a long busy day. Polished chrome and crystal adds sparkle and glamour to this new improved personal sanctuary.
