Small interiors can be challenging to decorate. It's important to find ways to maximize on important issues such as color palette, furniture layout, storage, lighting and accessorizing. Here are some ideas to maximize your small space.

* Color - Ensure the theme of your space is reflected throughout your entire interior. Continuity allows a space to feel
bigger: too many different styles and colors will overpower. Use a color palette offering different tones and shades of
similar colors will create a sense of flow.

* Furniture - Create the illusion of more floor space with furniture pieces that will help you do so. Choose pieces like a
glass tabletop and armless, leggy upholstered furnishings. In a bedroom, wall mounted bedside tables function
well and contribute a feeling of openness to the room. In smaller spaces, the more that's up off the floor, the bigger
     the room feels.

* Storage - Improvise by using space in unexpected ways, like introducing a walk-through library in a extrawide hallway.
Customize the space with built-ins that maximize vertical storage space...think floor to ceiling. Use a small scale
ottoman with storage capabilites and floating shelves offer storage of collectibles but visually don't take up much
     space.

* Lighting - Lighting is a key component in all interiors, but in small spaces it helps to enlarge the space by keeping it
light and bright. Directional track lighting that spotlights key pieces of art and architecture adds drama without taking
up physical space. Uplights cleverly hidden at the base or behind tall plants or objcts opens up corners and washes
diffused light onto the ceiling giving visual height to the space.

* Accessories - Featuring one beautiful piece of art, heirloom piece, or treasured belonging will be more effective in a
small space than a grouping of many different objects. For a clean, uncluttered look try small groupings with variations
of height, repeating several objects such as decorative vases. Don't only buy small accessories. Buy some big pieces
that have some significance. A grouping of mirrors or a large one strategically placed can make a small space much
larger and lighter. Only display items you absolutely love.

Dare to dream big, use inventive solutions to maximize your space limitations!

Home decor should be forward-thinking, comfortable, personal and above all - fashionable - just like our clothing!
The big news for Spring 2010 - starting right now...color is back!
However the trick to making your home positively vibrant is to remember that as bold as you may want to go, you need to do it subtly. There's no doubt that color is the best antidote to all the wintery gray skies we have experienced over the last couple months. However balance out color with neutral tones to soften the look.

Here are a couple examples of how to be subtly bold with color this spring.

Use "purple", winter's hot fashion shade, in softened hues of lavender.
Let "navy blue" replace the black as a contrast color, looks great with white.
"Yellow" adds a sense of fun and sun and try contrasting it with a sharp gray or a soft orange.
"Greens" are everywhere this season capturing the seasons freshness and rebirth.
2010 is all about independence and how you feel in your own home. Color will help you portray your personal style and bring harmony to your home.

Working With A Interior Designer

Using an interior designer can be a good investment; not only can these professionals save you time, but they can save you money too. They know precisely where to go to find the right furnishings and can offer advise on where you can save and where you should splurge. They can often find creative new ways to incorporate pieces you already have. The right designer for you is someone with whom you can be completely honest - and vise versa. You should be able to talk openly about what you do and don’t like and what you can and can’t afford. These pros have access to many furniture lines that you won’t find in retail stores; these “to-the-trade” pieces can only be purchased through interior designers.

Some designers charge a flat fee for project, while others bill by the hour. Or they may charge a percentage of materials and labor or even go by “cost plus”, where you’ll pay retail costs for your furnishings and the designer’s fee is the difference between that price and what he or she paid wholesale. No matter what the fee structure is, a designer that is right for you and your project should be able to reflect your dreams and personality and do so, within the timeline and budget constraints.

What Size Should My Area Rug Be?

Rugs add comfort, and visual interest to the space as well as help unify its furnishings.
But before you buy beware, this is the one area of decorating where size and placement matters. Below are some guidelines:

Standard Living/Family Room – it should be proportional to a room’s floor space.
Ideally, it should leave an equal amount of floor bare all around it. This applies
regardless of obstacles like fireplace hearths, radiators, and furniture set against
the walls. An alterative is to place the rug so it reaches under all or most of the
furniture’s front legs (it’s not always necessary the back legs are on it). There also
shouldn’t be more then 2’ of rug beyond the furniture. Either place a piece of
furniture in it such as a console table behind a sofa or find a smaller size.

In the Bedroom – Use the same rules as in the living room: choose a rug that leaves approximately 2” of bare floor at the edges. However, if your bed is off center, centering the rug under the bed will look awkward. As alternative, use two or three smaller rugs in the room – one on each side of the bed and perhaps the third at the end of the bed, instead of one large one.

How can I give my bathroom an update without breaking the piggy bank?

Here are a few tips that will add style and detail with very little cash output and just a bit of work.

Frame your existing mirror – to give it definition and updated style in 2 ½ “ wide wood or MDF (Medium density fiber board), stained or painted and attach it right to the mirror to the wall around it.

Dress up the cabinetry – for a flat plain door & drawer fronts, add detail to plain vanity doors by installing panel mouldings about 2” to 3” in from the edges (found in all hardware stores).

Sleek new hardware – replace outdated and worn out cabinetry knobs & pulls with new good-looking versions in brushed nickel & chrome and are available at reasonable prices everywhere.

Change the light fixture – Double sconces on either side of a mirror are an especially hot look right now or a great looking single fixture that radiates a good amount of light for the space.

Stylish new sink – if your budget allows, you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make.

Cover outdated floors - with peel-and-stick linoleum tiles in a fresh new color.

Added storage – in a bath without much storage, make use of the vertical wall space over the toilet and hang an inexpensive new medicine cabinet chest or floating open shelves.

Whether your design style is formal, casual, spare, or a funky mix, take a thoughtful look at the design elements and furniture arrangement in your space. Is your room in sync with your style? If not, use these tips to do a little redecorating.

Using Fabrics Creatively:

Fabric weaves, finishes, and patterns express varying degrees of formality.
Eclectic – linen is a good choice for eclectic rooms that are sleek yet casual.
Casual – whether contemporary or country, dress sofas & chairs in the same
textural denims, plaids & cottons you wear on weekends.
Formal – matched fabrics convey a formal look, as do elegant silk, damask, and
Chintz.

Frame a View:

Window treatments play a major role in building your style.
Eclectic – loosely draped curtains express a casual, clean or eclectic look.
Minimal – stick to unadorned shades, blinds or shutters.
Formal – consider traditional drapes with flowing floor –to-ceiling panels,
Valances & elegant trim.

Furniture Tells a Story:

Tailor furniture for the way you want to use your space.
Casual – Oversized roll-arm sofas & chairs with an abundance of pillows.
Modern – 20th century classics such as Barcelona & Wassily chairs.
Formal – antiques, reproductions featuring classic details such as camelbacks
on sofas or ball-and-claw feet.

Factor in Texture:

Most important to give visual interest and personality.
Casual – rough textures such as berber carpet, natural fibre rugs, wicker furniture
Work in casual & eclectic rooms.
Formal – smooth textures such as lacquer, glass, mirrors and polished woods
convey a sleek yet formal attitude.

Creating eye-catching displays of artwork or photos throughout your home.

Create Unity – Color and theme unit a display, but subtle differences add interest.
(ie. all of the pictures are black & white, all frames are the same
color, not necessarily the same size, all are family photos or
similar theme).

Focal Point – Give the arrangement a focal point. One larger or a set of larger
pictures or photos can be placed in the center, with smaller ones
radiating their way out from the inner pictures for a more casual
grouping.

Center Stage – Find a wall space where images can take center stage. A hallway is
the perfect spot for a large arrangement of pictures.

Arrangement – Let the wall space suggest the shape of the arrangement – a tall,
narrow space might be enliven by pictures hung in a tall column, a
long hallway lends itself to a series of photographs hung gallery
style or hung in a uniform layout.

Renovation: Starting with the big Picture

Whether planning a major decorating project or just freshening up a bit, the first step in any successful redo is a little self-introspection. The needs of a family, for example, are completely different from those of empty nesters. So start by asking yourself a few questions.

Who will use this room?

Is it a space that’s utilized on a daily basis or one that sees only occasional use?

Part of the process, is to consider the architectural assets your room offers. A living room with a grand fireplace already has its own “built-in” focal point. In a space that’s nothing more then a square box, you’ll need to create a center of focus such as an armoire or eye-catching work of art.

What pieces do you own that will work in the new scheme and which ones will youneed to purchase?

Are there any physical restrictions for the furnishings on your wish list? The grand
piano would be marvelous in the living room but will it fit through the door (or window).

Budget is a “big” part of the equation, it’s also important to prioritize. Not everything needs to be completed on your wish list at once, some of the best dressed rooms evolve over time adapting to the changing needs of you and your family.
